Ichabod

Tom Mison stars as Ichabod Crane in Fox's new series "Sleepy Hollow"

Origin: Hebrew
Gender: Male
Meaning: "No glory"
Pronunciation: IK-a-bahd
Other forms: N/A

Ichabod is a tricky name. There is something endearing about its clunkiness, but it is so tied to the character of Ichabod Crane, that it becomes almost unusable. But before "Sleepy Hollow", Ichabod was the son of Phinehas, who died at the battle of Aphek, and the grandson of Eli. His mother gave him the name Ichabod on her death bed, indicating that the "glory had departed from Israel".

In Washington Irving's classic short story, Ichabod Crane is the protagonist, who is a superstitious schoolmaster that tries to win the hand of Katrina Van Tassel, but is bested by local hero Brom Bones. He leaves the Van Tassel's party, where he had intended to propose to Katrina, and rides through several reportedly "haunted" spots, and his imagination starts to get the better of him. It is then he sees a mysterious cloaked rider, and is shocked to see that his head is not on his shoulders, but instead on his saddle. Ichabod rides to the bridge where the Hessian, the ghostly rider, is said to disappear.
The next morning, Ichabod is no where to be found, and Katrina eventually marries Brom, who seems to be suspiciously knowing of the whole affair.

"Sleepy Hollow" has been made into many adaptions, Tim Burton's film with Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci being one of the most famous. Recently, Fox has made it into a series. Ichabod Crane is brought back to life in the modern age, and teams up with detective Abbie Mills, and solve the mysteries that plague the town.

  1. Ichabod is a very intriguing name. But perhaps I like it more now with Tom Mison's face on it. :)
